Bioremediation in Alberta: A Natural, Cost-effective Cleanup Solution

Bioremediation is the process of injecting microbes into the contaminant plume and allowing them time to break down the impacts as part of their natural process. Vista Environmental Science offers bioremediation Calgary services to address soil and groundwater contamination through controlled biological processes. We aim to provide remediation strategies that align with Alberta environmental regulations while maintaining accurate documentation and reporting throughout the project lifecycle. This ensures that all remediation activities are measurable, verifiable, and suited to the environmental conditions of each site.

Bioremediation can be applied ‘in situ’ to reduce site disruption or ‘ex situ’ when controlled treatment environments are required. Contact us to discuss bioremediation requirements and review suitable solutions for your site conditions.

Key Advantages of Bioremediation

Bioremediation offers cost-effective, non-disruptive, and environmentally responsible treatment for contaminated soil.

A Fraction of the Cost of Excavating

The process consists of a small fleet of drill rigs fitted with augers and application sprayers. With a large reduction in equipment and labour needed to treat a site, compared to excavating, the savings can be passed on to the client.

Non-Disruptive to Operations

Microbes are injected via small boreholes into the soil and multiple depths across the impact plume. The soil is left in place to provide microbes with an ecosystem to break down the plume. This allows operations (and revenue) at the property to continue while the soil is being treated.

Environmentally Friendly

The specially selected microbes are used effectively because their natural breakdown process converts harmful contaminants into carbon dioxide and water.

The microbes treat the impacts as food to replicate and continue treating the soil. No need to send your impacted soil to the landfill. Treat it in place!

Applications of Bioremediation in Projects

Environmental regulations in Calgary and across Alberta require proper assessment and remediation of contaminated sites. The common applications of bioremediation are as follows:

  • Oil and gas sites: Treatment of hydrocarbon-impacted soil resulting from spills or leaks.

  • Commercial properties: Remediation of contamination from historical industrial use or storage tanks.

  • Municipal infrastructure: Management of contaminated soils during construction or redevelopment projects.

  • Agricultural areas: Treatment of pesticide or fuel-related contamination in soil systems.

We strive to implement remediation plans that align with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas guidelines. Each application is based on a detailed site assessment to ensure the selected method is appropriate for the contaminant type and environmental conditions.

Key Factors That Influence Bioremediation Effectiveness

A thorough understanding of site conditions is required before initiating remediation. Here are the variables that directly influence the rate and extent of contaminant degradation:

  • Soil composition: Permeability and organic content affect oxygen flow and microbial activity.

  • Moisture levels: Adequate moisture is necessary to support microbial metabolism.

  • Temperature conditions: Microbial processes are temperature-sensitive and may vary seasonally in Calgary.

  • Oxygen availability: Aerobic processes require sufficient oxygen, often introduced through soil aeration systems.

  • Nutrient balance: Nitrogen and phosphorus may be added to support microbial growth where deficiencies exist.

We aim to monitor and adjust these parameters throughout the remediation process to maintain optimal conditions. Go through our blogs for additional insights!
